I-Commons Lab Reports

For a few years between 2006-08, the Creative Commons Foundation ‘incubated’ an organization called Icommons with the stated vision of developing “a united global commons front by collaborating with open education, access to knowledge, free software, open access publishing and free culture communities around the world”.

Among its various activities over a brief, busy existence, ICommons produced monthly magazines on Copyright Law that were called ‘Lab Reports’. Beautifully designed, among its regular contents, these magazines featured articles that had been commissioned under a collaborative project called ‘Local Context, Global Commons’ between three organizations in South Africa, Brazil and India. The aim of this collaboration, broadly stated, was to attempt to forge a common discourse on Intellectual Property from the Global South.

Tragically, once Icommons perished, so did these magazines archives. As one of the authors affected by their sudden disappearance, I recently attempted to track down whatever could be found of them on the internet. Included below are copies of the few Lab Reports that I was able to find from August 2007 to April 2008.
